Using mobile phones on plane?!?

I just watched movie Final Approach, and all the way through the movie pangers keep talking and texting on mobile phones. I fly quite often and I know that up there, any normal mobile is out of coverage. Are the fim producers so ignorant and stupid they don`t know it, or is there a special trick to use the mobile phone on the plane?
