How do you destroy a voodoo doll without killing the person it resembles?

I was watching the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie and there was a part with a voodoo doll in it. I thought to myself, how do you destroy those without killing the person also? If i made a doll and i couldn't destroy it because it would kill me would make me mad lol
