How do i get the lights to turn off in my 2001 Ford Explorer?

I have a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport and I'd really like to sit in the back with the hatchback open and watch movies at the drive in. However the overhead lights turn on every time the trunk is open and wont turn off. Ive tried waiting them out, taking the keys out, and searching the manual--all to no avail. Help please!
